Course of Studies: B.Sc. Biomedical Sciences
When I took part in my first MUN conference in 2009, I became fascinated by the idea of Model United Nations. I believe it is a great opportunity not only to understand but also to experience the work of the United Nations. Although it might sometimes be disappointing and exhausting when sitting in your committee enjoying endless thematic circles with a concluding resolution which actually contains no specific measures at all to deal with the most urgent topics.
I believe exactly this helps you to understand with which problems the real United Nations are confronted daily. Taking part in a MUN gave me respect for the very difficult work of UN delegates.
Moreover, I think that the preparation for the NMUN itself will teach all participants how to do fundraising, hold speeches in English in front of a large group, negotiate with people that represent a completely different view and so on. This acquisition of soft skills is something you – and especially me as a student of natural sciences – can’t learn in your ordinary course of studies at university.
Having been told by several students of Marburg who were members of earlier NMUN delegations that it was a great experience, I don’t want to pass up this unique opportunity to participate at the NMUN in New York 2013. I’m looking forward to meeting great people during preparation and whilst the conference in March.
